Understanding Mid-Market Exchange Rates vs. Bank Tourist Rates
What Is the Mid-Market Rate?
The mid-market rate (also called the interbank or spot rate) is the exact midpoint between wholesale buy and sell prices on global FX markets. It is the fairest exchange rate with 0% hidden markup.
Hidden Credit Card & Bank Spreads
Traditional banks and airport kiosks often advertise “Zero Commission” while embedding a 2.5% to 5% exchange rate spread. Use our Fee selector (1%, 2.5%, 4%) to see the true net payout.
Always Pay in Local Currency Abroad
When an overseas ATM or card terminal asks if you want to be billed in your home currency (Dynamic Currency Conversion), always decline and choose the local currency to avoid extra 4%–7% conversion markups.
Frequently Asked Questions — Currency Converter
How do I calculate the inverse exchange rate between two currencies?
Divide 1 by the direct exchange rate. For example, if 1 USD = 0.9245 EUR, then 1 EUR = 1 ÷ 0.9245 = 1.0817 USD. Both direct and inverse rates are displayed automatically in our converter.
Why is my bank's exchange rate different from the rate shown here?
Our calculator shows the wholesale mid-market exchange rate. Retail banks, credit cards, and remittance providers typically add a 1% to 4% spread on top of the mid-market rate.
Can I enter a custom contract or remittance exchange rate?
Yes! Use the 'Custom Rate Override' box in Step 2 to type the exact rate quoted by your bank, Wise, Payoneer, or money exchange house.
What are ISO 4217 currency codes?
ISO 4217 is the international standard defining three-letter codes for currencies (such as USD for US Dollar, EUR for Euro, GBP for British Pound, and BDT for Bangladeshi Taka), where the first two letters represent the country code and the third represents the currency name.
