How Drift-Free Browser Stopwatch & Lap Split Timing Works
Monotonic High-Resolution Clock
Basic timers that simply add 10ms inside setInterval lose accuracy when you switch browser tabs. Our chronometer uses the hardware-backed High Resolution Time API (performance.now) so elapsed time never drifts.
Lap Split vs. Cumulative Time
Every time you press Split Lap (or the L key), the stopwatch records both your individual lap duration (split time since the previous lap) and your total cumulative time from the start.
Zero-Dependency Web Audio Alarms
Our countdown alarm synthesizes crystal-clear harmonic chimes directly through the browser's native Web Audio API—meaning the alarm works reliably even if your internet disconnects mid-session.
Frequently Asked Questions — Stopwatch & Countdown Timer
Will the stopwatch or countdown keep accurate time if I switch browser tabs?
Yes! Because we calculate elapsed and remaining time against your device's monotonic hardware clock (performance.now) rather than counting timer ticks, switching tabs or minimizing the window never causes time lag.
What keyboard shortcuts can I use to control the stopwatch?
Press Spacebar to Start or Pause the timer, press L to record a new Lap Split, and press R to Reset the chronometer.
How do I export my recorded lap splits?
Click 'Copy All Laps' above the lap cards or 'Copy Exact Timecode & Lap Summary' in the left panel to copy all lap numbers, individual split times, and cumulative times to your clipboard.
Can I test the countdown alarm volume before starting a timer?
Yes! Click the '🔊 Test Sound' button in the left panel to preview the Bell, Beep, or Pulse chime at your current speaker volume.
