How to Calculate Work Hours & Convert Minutes to Decimal Hours

24-Hour Conversion & Midnight Rollover

To find the duration between two clock times, convert both to 24-hour military minutes (adding 12 hours to PM times after 12:59 PM). If the End Time is smaller than the Start Time (e.g., 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM), 24 hours (1,440 minutes) are added automatically for overnight shifts.

Why 8 Hours 45 Minutes Equals 8.75 Decimal Hours

Payroll software multiplies your hourly wage by decimal hours (base-100), not clock minutes (base-60). Divide your minutes by 60: 15 mins = 0.25 hr, 30 mins = 0.50 hr, and 45 mins = 0.75 hr.
